Elementary students help local charity
Students at Peabody-Burns Elementary School have selected a single project to support this school year. They will be involved in a campaign to save "Pennies for the Pantry," in support of the food pantry at Burns.
"It seemed as if we were getting more and more requests to support national fund-raising efforts during the school year," said PBES principal Ken Parry. "While there is no doubt they are worthwhile organizations, it was difficult to make a choice about whether the American Heart Association was more worthy than the Kidney Foundation.
"We decided it would be better to select one that is local and concentrate the efforts on that. It is good for our children to learn to give locally," he added.
The Food Pantry serves families all over the county, not just in Burns.
"Often in the past there have been "extras" at the Food Pantry and staff members have brought them to the kids for special treats or parties rather than have them go to waste," said Parry. "So supporting them is a way for our students to express their appreciation."
Students will bring their pennies to school during the school year. The class which collects the most will win a popcorn party.
"The fund drive is for the kids," said Parry. "They won't be out soliciting funds. However, if anyone in either community wants to help out, we would accept contributions at the elementary school office."
