Drivers be aware as students head back to school

Peabody police chief Bruce Burke reminds that school is starting this week and motorists need to be on the lookout for students walking and riding bikes to school.

Burke said the crosswalk at Fourth and Walnut streets has been repainted and a sign replaced on Walnut designating the intersection a pedestrian crossing.

"For several years the cross walk has not been painted," said Burke. "And a number of years ago the sign at the north approach to the intersection was knocked over when someone slid into it in a snow storm.

"We have replaced the sign and the crosswalk has been repainted. Drivers need to be aware that children will be crossing there," he added.

Police officers will be patrolling all school zones and will be on the lookout for people violating traffic ordinances.

Burke also reminds motorists of the 15 mph speed zone at all four approaches to Third and Sycamore streets, near the United Methodist Church.

"With preschool classes at the church and elementary students on their way to PBES, the lower speed zone at that intersection needs to be observed," Burke said.

He also warns that officers will be watching for drivers younger than 18 who are not observing the new seat belt law that requires them and their passengers to be buckled up.

Currently law enforcement officers will issue warning citations about the lack of seat belts. After Jan. 1, the offense will warrant a ticket to drivers and passengers. Charges will be $60 plus court costs.
