Downtown banners are here

By LESLIE LaFOY

The banners are here! The banners are here!

You have never seen a happier bunch of people as those gathered around the open box containing the newly acquired "Welcome to Peabody" winter banners. What a sense of accomplishment!

Over the course of 18 months and through a Christmas wreath silent auction, a quilt drawing, a Main Street auction, the generous financial donations of individual community members and the Jack Walker family, the goal of purchasing decorative banners for downtown Peabody has finally been achieved.

The design committee plans to put them up the first weekend in December, just before the Bells, Boots and Buggies event. A heartfelt "thank you" to all who have helped to make this possible!

As Mary Avery has so wisely observed in her president's letter, goals have a natural way of changing in the process of striving for them. With the winter banners acquired, the committee members began to look beyond them to fall banners! Colorful, bright, welcoming in the days between the end of summer and Veterans Day. Of course. Why not? Perfectly do-able.

And so it is that we announce that the proceeds of this year's Main Street silent auction during the Bells, Boots and Buggies event will go toward the funds needed to purchase a second set of banners for historic downtown Peabody. In light of the event theme, this year we're auctioning cowboy boots decorated by creative local mavens.

If you'd like to contribute by decorating a boot, we still have a few left at the Main Street office. Please feel free to stop by and get one from Kristen Hooper. There are both adult and children's boots available. We ask that decorated boots be returned and ready for auction by Friday.

The decorated boots will be on display at the Legion on the day of the Bells, Boots and Buggies event Dec. 8. Community members may make their bids there and the winner will be notified the following day.

On other downtown design fronts — the Legion is wanting to do some repair and restoration of their building. Unfortunately, a search of local archives has proved to be less than fruitful in terms of finding old photographs of the building.

If anyone who has an old photograph or two of the building at 108 North Walnut would be willing to share it, we would be most appreciative. The photograph(s) will be copied and the original returned promptly.

Please contact Kristen Hooper at pmsa@peabodyks.com or 620-983-2174 if you can help us with this project.
