Donald Smith
William Donald Smith, 81, of Girard, died Nov. 12, 2003, at Mount Carmel Medical Center, Pittsburg.
He was a former funeral director for Baker Funeral Home in the 1950s.
Born May 30, 1922, near Dorrance, he was the son of Herbert Buckhart and Mary Elizabeth (Keeth) Smith.
He graduated from Dorrance High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Ft. Hays State University. He was a graduate of Kansas City College of Mortuary Arts.
He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II.
On May 12, 1942, he married Margaret Blandine Moore at Wilson. She died in 1995.
He married Colleen A. Hudgins on Nov. 30, 1996.
He worked as a funeral director at Stine-McClure Funeral Home in Kansas City and Baker Funeral Home in Peabody before moving to Girard in 1957, where he owned and operated W.D. Smith Funeral Home before retiring in 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Colleen; a son, Brian David Smith of Kingman; two daughters, Judith Ann Collins of Frontenac and Mary Beth Briggs of Wichita; four stepchildren, Judith Cowan and Kim Cobler of Fort Scott, Bob Duncan of Arma, and Robin Wutke of Girard; one sister, Violet Castner of Commerce City, Colo.; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with the Rev. Steve Cole officiating.
A private burial will be held at a later date.
A memorial has been established with the Girard Public Library.
