Domestic violence center offers help
Tonya L. Hornback and Deanne Nelson, representing the sexual assault/domestic violence center in Hutchinson and McPherson, attended the Interagency meeting Nov. 11, and told of the services they provide.
Hornback said they are looking for someone in Marion County who will volunteer to be an advocate for local people facing abuse.
"Family dynamics have changed so much," Nelson said. "There are a lot more cases of domestic violence right here in Marion County than you think."
Victims the agency has served have ranged in age from two months to 86 years.
Nelson said beauticians and barbers are being trained to identify clients having problems with abuse.
The agency also is working to help teachers identify evidence of abuse by observing students' behavior.
The women do presentations in high school classrooms, where issues such as date rape and dating violence are addressed.
"The sessions prepare them (students) for college and how to protect themselves," Hornback said.
Even church women's groups can benefit from a presentation, Nelson said. A 24-hour crisis line is available at 1-800-701-3630. To contact Hornback, call the Hutchinson office: 620-665-3630. Nelson may be contacted at the McPherson office: 620-241-6615.
