Development position will be decided Monday
Marion County Commission is moving closer to making a decision about a county economic development position.
Commissioner Dan Holub said Monday he would like a single point of contact for the county.
"If somebody came here today wanting to develop in the county, who would help them?" Holub asked. "People are looking every day and we've got to be ready."
Commissioner Randy Dallke said he liked Harvey County's approach with the county and cities supporting the position.
Holub said he would like the position to be filled by someone with business experience and a business background. He said he didn't think grant writing was essential, adding someone could be hired to write grants.
"It is critical for the person to develop relationships with local businesses," Holub said. He would like to see networking between businesses with cooperative purchasing and marketing.
"We need someone who can get things started and who knows what they're doing," Holub said.
Discussion followed regarding the person being full-time, part-time, or contractual. County clerk Carol Maggard said full time would require full benefits. Holub said he would consider a three-year contract with the right person.
The commission also discussed the location of the office.
"All the person needs is a car, computer and cell phone," said Holub.
Holub also would like to see neighborhood revitalization used as a tool with tax abatements. He said the League of Kansas Municipalities verified to him that county-wide revitalization is legal.
The commission will further discuss and make decisions at 1 p.m. Monday regarding the position.
