Defense propels Bluebirds to Great Eight championship

It was an even game for the first half Dec. 6 between Goessel High School and Argonia.
With the Bluebirds and Red Raiders tied at 27-27, Goessel's offense exploded for 25 points in the third quarter and the Bluebird defense held Argonia to only four fourth quarter points.
The game ended in a lopsided score of 65-43.
"We executed better as the night went on," coach Justin Coup said.
Leading the way for the Bluebird scoring was Garrett Hiebert with 19 points and eight rebounds. Jordan Voth scored 14 points with three assists, Nathan Ensz added seven points and eight rebounds, Travis Buller scored seven points with four steals, Tyler Schroeder canned six points, Justin Fensky added six points, Brett Goerzen had four points and three assists, and Nathan Amstutz scored two points.
It was lopsided from the start Friday night, as Peabody-Burns shooting was as cold as the weather outside. GHS got off to a quick start while Peabody-Burns could not find a basket until seven minutes and 20 seconds into the game.
Goessel led 13-0 late in the first quarter and 36-20 at halftime. The Warriors scored the first four points of the second half, but Goessel maintained a 15-point lead at the end of the third period.
With several break away layups the Bluebirds ended the game 76-53.
Scoring for the Bluebirds: Travis Buller 16, Jordan Voth 15, Garrett Hiebert 14, Tyler Schroeder 10, Brett Goerzen seven, Nathan Ensz six, Justin Fensky four, and Nathan Amstutz four.
Saturday's championship saw Goessel defeat Pretty Prairie. No results were yet available. This victory gives the Bluebirds a 4-0 record to start the 2005-06 season.
Goessel JV boys win
With good second and fourth quarters the Bluebird junior varsity boys' team beat Argonia 56-29.
Scoring for the Bluebirds were: Nathan Amstutz 19, Nathan Ensz 11, Austin Unruh seven, Kurtis Duerksen seven, Sam Lehrman three, Kendall Voth three, Cameron Voth two, Sheldon Goerzen two, and Travis Fensky two.
The Bluebirds out-rebounded Argonia 35-21.
