DAYS OF YORE: 45 years ago

(From the January 10, 1957, files of the Peabody Gazette Herald)

Edward Slocombe returned to Manhattan Sunday where he is attending Kansas State and Warren Slocombe went back to school at Hays Wednesday after spending the holidays with their parents.

Mr. and Mrs. Irvin McPheeters and family were Sunday dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cain at Burns.

Several men from Peabody were among the "early birds" who were on hand last week to get low numbered auto license tags. As usual there were some folks who waited from the early dawn hours to be first in line for tags. In fact some arrived before midnight and waited all night long. Sherman Marler of Marion got No 1, he started his vigil at 11:30 p.m. Henry Koslowsky of Peabody was a few minutes behind him for No. 3, since Marler took two numbers. Fred Hubman, Jr. got No 6 and Harry Hanneman No.'s 8 and 9. Two more Peabody men, Harold Seibel and Harry Schultz got 10 and 11, and Fred Graham was on hand to take No. 13.
