FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Peabody was shocked out of sleep in the middle of the night at 1 a.m. Monday by the rending crash of the Rock Island Twin Star Rocket derailing at the crossing of the Rock Island and Santa Fe railroads. Twenty-four passengers are hurt, but none killed.
Five men from Marion County will leave for military service on Oct. 7, according to the selective Service Office. Three of the five are from Peabody. They are Edmond Slocombe, Herman Hoberecht, and Corval Sattler. The two other men are Gerald Tajchman of Marion and Roger Farmer of Florence. All five are volunteers.
Several members of the Peabody Kiwanis Club were in Wichita the first of the week to attend various meetings of the Kansas District Kiwanis Convention being held there. Those attending most of the three-day affair with their wives were Owen McNeil, Earl Fickertt, Jim Baker, Bill Krause and Roy Larson.
