FORTY YEARS AGO

(From the July 5, 1962, files of the Peabody Gazette-Herald)

Two veteran city employees retired from work with the City of Peabody last Saturday. Both Walter Newton and Wm. L. Reed have passed the retirement age and decided to quit working at the jobs they had held for many years.

Orville Gibbs of Peabody was one of a group of five Marion County Highways Department employees who were honored upon their retirement last week.

Cullins Standard Service was one of nine Standard Service Stations in the State of Kansas to receive special company awards during the month of May.

The summer track program has taken young Peabody athletes to two more track meets in recent weeks. Both boys and girls participated and a fine array of wins was chalked up by the Peabody group. Some of the winners and placings are: Esther Mellott, 5th in 100-yard dash in 14.0; 3rd in the 50-yard low hurdles; 2nd in the high jump on fewer misses; Joe Stucky, 1st in pole vault with 9'10"; Doris Haas, 1st in the broad jump with a leap of 12'6"; 4th in the 8-pound shotput with a put of 18'6"; Beverly Smith, 2nd in broad jump with a leap of 11'11"; 2nd in 220-yard dash with 31.5; 4th in high jump. A 220-yard relay team comprised of Esther Mellott, Doris Haas, Beverly Smith, and Carolyn Stucky placed 2nd in the senior division with a time of 28.0.
