Peabody-Burns FFA members will be participating in the state fair at Hutchinson this weekend. Members will help man the "farm animal" display for kids Sunday and Monday. Brice Larimore, Steve King, Benny Nellans, and Jerod Grosse also will participate in a tractor troubleshooting contest at the fair.

The "Kansas" football teams had an auspicious start last week. First KU walloped Ball State; KSU got by a much tougher Texas Tech by a touchdown; and finally, the Kansas City Chiefs held on to win over Houston by a single point. This is football country — at least for a week.

The Pairs and Spares Class of the Peabody United Methodist Church is serving a sloppy joe dinner with proceeds to benefit the Dale Buller family.

Three more students at college have reported this week. Faunetta Bloomer, Trent Brunner, and Scott Harris have enrolled at Butler County Community College in El Dorado.

Mrs. Dorothy Craig entertained with a neighborhood coffee in honor of Mrs. Paul Richmond who has recently moved into the area, and Mrs. Sean Siegfreid who has recently moved away from the area.

Mr. and Mrs. Sol Leppke entertained Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Lepke at dinner Sunday at the Red Coach Inn in Newton. The occasion was Wilbur's birthday.

august 27, 1956

Marilyn Gaines, Peabody High School student, who was sponsored in the Marion County Fair beauty contest by the Peabody Kiwanis Club, was picked as one of the three finalists Tuesday night.

Two members of the Peabody school faculty were among those receiving the master's degree in education at exercises at Emporia State College last Friday evening. Owen McNeil, veteran junior high principal, and John Nettleton, who is to be principal, received their degrees.

Ella Irene Avery Slater was born at Herscher, Ill., Nov. 30, 1861, and departed this life Aug. 17, 1956, at the age of 94 years, eight months, and 17 days.

september 6, 1906

George Wagner is clerking for the Peabody Hardware Company, while Joe Baker is away on a trip to Minneapolis.

Mrs. A.E. LaMaster met with an accident while putting fruit in the cellar last week. The top step broke, giving her a bad fall. No bones were broken but she was badly bruised.

The ladies of the Christian church will have an exchange in Huguenin's meat market Saturday afternoon.

september 1, 1881

J.C. Olinger has a field of 90 acres of corn, on the "poor upland," that would make a hungry hog's mouth water. He planted early and without stirring the ground. It is by far the best piece of corn in the neighborhood.

Mr. Amborn has opened out his stock of goods in the post office room. They comprise fresh candies, fruits, stationery, notions, cigars, etc. We predict for him a profitable trade.

Sidewalks in the west part of the city now present a better appearance. The walk to the fairground is not all done yet but most of it is. The walk on Plum Street and that on Olive Street are nearly done.
