A letter of congratulations was received last week by Denae Pickens Flaming from the dean of Kansas State College in Manhattan. The dean commended Denae on her outstanding scholastic achievements at Kansas State last spring as she was honored by being on the dean's honor roll with a 4.0 grade average her last semester there. Denae completed three years of college at K-State and will be starting as a full-time student at Bethel College in Newton. Her major is elementary education.

Several area bowlers competed in state and national bowling tournaments this summer. Among the top participants in the ABC National Tournament at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City were Steve Rose, Scott Alcorn, Kendall Winters, and Mike Berger.

Kiwanians from Marion, Emporia, and Council Grove joined the local group and their spouses Monday evening at the senior center for a tribute to John DeForest's record of 50 years of perfect attendance at Kiwanis meetings and his other contributions to the club.

August 20, 1981

Mr. and Mrs. Norman Bailey and Kraig of Emporia were Wednesday guests of Fern Flint. Mrs. Flint accompanied them to Hutchinson where they attended the Cosmosphere and did some shopping.

Mr. and Mrs. Herb Gaines and R.J. were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Berns and family of Perry. Bo Gaines was a weekend guest of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Gardner.

Special music at the United Methodist Church Sunday was provided by Mrs. W.S. Jewell and Mrs. W.M. Tate who played a medley of familiar hymns and by Miss Kelly Williams who sang a solo, "How Great Thou Art." Miss Williams was a guest in the Paul Williams home.

50 years ago

August 16, 1956

Mrs. Olen Reid passed away last Wednesday in the Hillsboro hospital after a long illness. Services were held Saturday at St. Patrick's church in Florence. Survivors include her husband, a son, Leo, and a daughter, Phyllis.

Edna May Ewert, Peabody's winningest contestant in many national contests, has won again. This time she was a winner in the preliminary contest of a mattress promotion. She wins a new mattress and is eligible for even larger prizes in the finals.

Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Poe are in Chicago attending the Democratic convention.

The Rock Island painters have been busy around the depot lately and the station is bright as a new pin inside and out and the tower and all the other buildings have been touched up.

Bernie Calbeck is spending a two-week vacation in Colorado. Frank Varner is taking care of his mail route during his absence.

John Clark and wife, Tacke, Mrs. H. Graham and Will Litton, all of Braddock attended the picnic at Halstead Thursday.
