Andy Rosine placed third in the 2A long jump last week at the state track meet at Wichita with a jump of 22 feet, seven inches.

Helen Storbeck of Winfield spent the Memorial Day weekend as a guest of Margaret Jewell. She returned to her home Monday afternoon.

Charles N. Grindstaff, 74, of Peabody, retired machinist, died May 27, 1996, at Peabody Community Living Center.

Mr. and Mrs. Milton Holloway of Easton were visitors lately at the Gary Jones home. Mr. Holloway was formerly a school principal in Peabody. Their son, Milton, soon to graduate from Creighton University, is setting up dental practice in Beloit.

Ted Knust of Peabody was one of three Newton area bowlers who has been elected as members of the Newton Bowling Association's Hall of Fame.

The Kansas City Royals are off to their most miserable start in many years, but in the past few days they have won two games in a row, so maybe they are ready to begin playing ball.

Mr. and Mrs. S.A. Stovall were to go to Atchison Wednesday to bring home Mike Stovall from his school there for summer vacation.

Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Kirkpatrick and Jack will go to Grinnell, Iowa, this weekend to attend commencement exercises. Dick Kirkpatrick is one of the graduates. He will receive a commission in the Air Force immediately after commencement.

William David Suffield died Friday, May 25, at his home near Peabody. He was 73 years old and had been a farmer nearly all of his life, retiring six years ago.

Ed Stockdale is here from Kansas City visiting his boys who are staying here with their relatives, the Bechtels and the Nusbaums.

Miss Elizabeth Jackson of Wichita was home for the eighth grade commencement in which her sister, Mabel, is one of the graduates.

A. Berns had eight carloads of fed steers on the Kansas City market last week.

A strawberry and ice cream and strawberry shortcake festival will be held in the Presbyterian church Friday evening, May 27. Proceeds for the benefit of the building fund.

Boys, if you want one of those little nobby hats, go to C.S. Eyer & Co.'s. They are sold cheap for cash.

A call at the band room Friday night revealed the fact that the band men are putting in some hard work in their practice of music. Our people may expect to be aroused from their slumbers with sweet strains of music some of these beautiful nights.

Students inducted into national honor society

Three Marion County students were among 85 Washburn University students recently inducted into Phi Kappa Phi national honor society.

They were Kayla Barrett of Marion, who also received the Phi Kappa Phi junior scholars award; Heidi Zogelman of Florence; and Kyle Adams of Hillsboro.

Members include juniors in the top 7.5 percent of their class and seniors in the top 10 percent, along with outstanding graduate students, faculty, professional staff, and alumni.
