Graveside services for Ruth Murray were Dec. 12 at Prairie Lawn Cemetery.

Avis Herbert spent from Tuesday through Saturday after Thanksgiving with her daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Dwight Teaford in Union Star, Mo.

Judy Mellott returned home Saturday evening after spending a week with her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Tony McConnell and children in Marysville, Tenn.

Annette Warkentine, Kansas Shorthorn Lassie Queen, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Warkentine of Burns, recently returned from Louisville, Ky., where they attended the North American International and the National Shorthorn show. Annette ended her year's reign as the Kansas Shorthorn Queen.

Stanley Hansen was a Thanksgiving visitor for several days at the home Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Hansen. Mrs. Mildred Gaines was also a guest at the Hansens on Thanksgiving Day.

Art Stallwitz presented a slide show of his Alaska trip as afternoon entertainment for the fellowship meal crowd Tuesday. He considers Vancouver the most beautiful of cities he has seen.

Mayor John DeForest had a slight limp for a couple of days this week. He received a slight sprain Sunday playing basketball with "some younger kids" in the DeForest back yard. What bothered him most, however was the singing of "Darling, We Are Growing Old" at Kiwanis Monday night.

Paul Reiner was displaying one of the biggest raccoons seen in these parts in a long time Monday. The old grandpappy coon had been treed by Reiner's dog Sunday night about 10:30. Paul got out his flashlight and .22 and shot the big fellow out of his perch. The coon was flat and his coat in prime condition. He weighed an estimated 35 to 40 pounds.

Mr. and Mrs. W.V. Krause visited in the Wharton Hoch home in Marion Sunday evening.

Mr. Joseph McCreary and Miss Elsie Tucker were married at the Methodist parsonage last Wednesday afternoon by Rev. Switzer and went immediately to housekeeping on the Heagy farm just southeast of town. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.M. McCreary and the bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Tucker near Elbing.

A traveling showman gave a magic lantern entertainment at Horner schoolhouse Tuesday evening.

O.B. Stout is shucking corn for T.B. Townsend.

Walter Jordan had the misfortune to lose a good horse recently. It fell in a well.

December 8, 1881

The 11th day of the Guiteau trial was not a very eventful one. The prisoner was, as ever, beyond the control of the court, and kept up his continual comments upon proceedings. The witness was asked, "Are you insane at all?" and replied "I am not an expert." Question: "You shot him in the back?" Answer: "I did not fire at any particular place."
