Kara Adams, daughter of Marie and Lyman Adams of Hillsboro, and Derek Klingenberg, son of Vernon and Carol Klingenberg, were recipients of the Kansas 4-H Key Award, presented at the 1996 4-H Achievement Banquet held on Nov. 2.
Friends gathered at the home of Jon and Esther Brooks Friday evening. Several rounds of pitch were played between glimpses of trying to keep up with activities of J.R. Ewing.
Sally and Paul Atwater and Richard DeForest of Wichita, Charles and Joyce DeForest, and Bruce and Jean Smith helped move Louise and John DeForest back to their home Sunday after they spent a month at Peabody Community Living Center while their home was being redecorated.

A former Marion County man has been fired from his post as controller of Kansas office of Social and Rehabilitation Services Friday over an alleged misuse of funds. Arthur Lewerenz, former Marion County businessman, ranch operator, and political figure, was first suspended when his answers to questions about suspected shortages were not acceptable and was then fired by state SRS executive Robert Harder. Lewerenz was convicted in July of 1972 of voluntary manslaughter in the death of his wife, the former Susan Olin of Peabody. He was on parole when hired by SRS and probably still is.
Mrs. Carroll Herbert was hostess to the Friday bridge club at her home Friday afternoon. Mrs. Dorothy Craig was a guest.
Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey Albright spent the weekend in Chanute with their son's family, the Gaylon Albrights.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gard visited his sister, Mrs. J.E. Roberts at St. Luke Hospital in Marion. Mrs. Roberts suffered a stroke Sunday morning.
Cindy Moffett of Wichita spent the weekend with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Moffett.
J.M. Liggett has moved from a room he occupied in the hotel to the apartment in the hotel recently vacated by the Ed Sheahons when they moved downstairs.

november 22, 1906
Five inches of snow greeted the people here Monday morning and cold weather with a little more snow at intervals continued until yesterday morning when the sun came out bright and thawing commenced. It is reported to be the greatest fall of snow in November in 18 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Smith gave a supper after the dance Thursday night, their guests being Dan Snyder and wife, Sherwood Noll and wife, Fred Pettit, and Miss Mildred Pettit.
The pie social given by the choir of the Christian church at the Grand View school house last Wednesday evening drew a very large crowd and the choir netted $26.30 from the entertainment. Part of the proceeds came from the voting contest to decide who was the prettiest girl present. Miss Maybelle Roberts received the most votes and was awarded a handsome cake.

For more than a year a Mrs. Thorn of Canisteo, New York, has been unable to speak above a whisper. She became so incensed at seeing her husband, who is a professed temperence man, standing at the bar of saloon, tipping a glass of beer, and, believing he was getting drunk, she rushed at him, screaming at the top of her voice. She now has full control of it.
John Burgett and wife were made happy last Tuesday by a young lady calling on them and proposing to stay about 18 years.
Mr. Knight, who lately sold his farm here, to his father-in-law, Mr. Westbrook, and went back east, with his wife to stay, has repented, like the prodigal son, and now acknowledges that Kansas is the place for him and so he comes back to plant himself for good — and "grow up."
