A new sign is up at the Open Door and Don's Drugs this week. The old Rexall sign, not accurate for many years, had been up for more than half a century, possibly dating into the 1930s. The "Higgins" name had been painted over, but was still visible.

Prairie Lawn Cemetery board has earmarked $1,500 for Civil War markers at gravesites in Prairie Lawn. Tom Schmidt reports research is about 50% complete.

The Scott Robinsons were dinner guests of his parents, Randy and Betty Robinson.

october 29, 1981

Peabody-Burns Board of Education president Bob Morgan and Superintendent Norris Wika plan to attend a regional meeting of the Kansas Association of School Boards at Hesston Wednesday.

Chief Petty Officer Loren Hodel retired Sept. 30 from the U.S. Navy after 23 years of service and presently is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Hodel in Hillsboro, and friends in Peabody. Hodel retired after returning from his last cruise, to the Hawaii Island area, on the Wichita.

Mr. and Mrs. Merle Eberly of Maize spent Friday as guests of the Harry Scrivners.

october 25, 1956

Walter "Zeke" White, 60, a resident of Peabody since 1911, was found dead Saturday in the basement of the Peabody State Bank. He was found by Ervin Knox, local trucker, who had been asked by bank employees to go see if he could find White. Death was by his own hands, according to the coroner. The deceased was born in New York City and came to Peabody in 1911 as a boy of 14. (He was one of the Orphan Train children.) He was raised by the Ervin Slaymaker family.

Mrs. Reeta Gillet of southeast of Peabody was one of the ladies appearing on the IGA Party Line television program Tuesday afternoon. The TV show is staged in Wichita.

The Kathryn Lathrop of Los Angeles, Calif., came the first of the week to visit in the Dr. Jessen home and with other relatives and friends.

November 1, 1906

The proceeds of the box social at the Bond school last Friday was $18.

Mrs. Sickelbower and little son of Scott City are visiting her parents, J.L. Scriver and wife.

The ladies of the Christian church in Peabody will have a pie social at Pleasant Hill school house this evening. Proceeds are for the benefit of the church.

october 27, 1881

Peabody boasts an excellent string band. The music was decidedly good last Friday evening.

Call at Seybold's Pharmacy for all kinds of fishing tackle — assortment is now complete. Also baseballs and bats.

The wheat market is dead now. Number three ranges at 93-95 cent, number two is chiefly bought up for milling purposes at fancy figures.
