The National Center for Small Communities has announced the City of Peabody mayor Tod Porter is the recipient of the American Hometown Leadership award for outstanding leadership in communities of 25,000 or less. Wal-Mart, which sponsors the award to promote strong leadership in small towns, presented a grant of $5,000 to the City of Peabody in Porter's honor.

Harold and Cleta Richmond will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at the Peabody Senior Center. They have seven children, 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

october 21, 1982

A delightful open house honoring Dr. Kay Crider Martinez was attended by about 100 people Saturday afternoon at the Axtell branch, Peabody. During the course of the reception Saturday, an emergency called to the clinic. Doctor and staff left the social scene to attend to the injury. This incident clearly illustrates the wisdom of having a resident doctor in Peabody.

Guests at the home of Mrs. Ruth Truax last week were her cousins, Mrs. Hattie Pfaff and friend, Leon Wickham of Enid, Okla.

Mrs. Hubert Lambert of Elbing and her aunt, Mrs. Clara Larsen, were visitors at the home of Mrs. Agnes Davis last Wednesday.

october 17, 1957

Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Warkentine announce the arrival of a daughter, Paula Jill, on Oct. 19 at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton. She weighed 7 pounds 6 ounces.

Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hodges are the parents of a daughter, Mary Ellen, born Tuesday morning at St. Luke Hospital in Marion. She weighed 6 pounds 4 ounces.

Mrs. Herman Heyland and Emil Heyland returned 10 days ago from two weeks' visit in the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Colwell, Mr. Colwell, and Johnnie of Hastings, Minn.

october 24, 1907

A daughter arrived at the home of Art Bailey and wife in East Branch on Monday.

D.J. Coughlin, head of Pettit's dress goods department, spent Sunday with his family in Newton.

The Presbyterian ladies will give a dinner in the Brunk building, the old Scott furniture store, Saturday evening beginning at 5 o'clock. Price 25c. A splendid place to get an excellent dinner.

November 2, 1882

Five hundred old newspapers for sale at 50c per hundred.

What Willis Westbrook don't know about birds is considerable, if we judge his advice to bird fanciers, and he hadn't better come fooling around our canaries, "scalding and picking" them if he knows what is good for him.

The editor and editrice of this valuable paper were in St. Louis last week and navigated the raging Mississippi.
