Nations Bank and Peabody State Bank jointly announced a purchase agreement that has been signed for the Peabody State Bank to purchase the Nations Bank Benton Banking Center, located at 234 N. Main, Benton. As of June 30, 1997, the Peabody State Bank has assets of approximately $25 million.

The annual reunion of the Hess-Ross families met for their 67th reunion on Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Peabody Senior Center. Daniel M. Hess and his sister, Annie (Hess) Ross were the first generation of these reunions. Daniel Hess was the grandfather of Esther (Hess) Stucky, Betty (Hess) Sebree and Maxine (Atkins) Seibel, all of Peabody.

Norma and N.M. Patton were hosts for the Oct. 16 meeting of the Sorosis Beta club. The program about their bank collection was presented by the Pattons.

Herb Winter, long time Peabody businessman, auto salesman and sports enthusiast died Friday, Oct. 8, at Axtell Christian Hospital. He had been in poor health for many years.

Brenda Riggs was crowned Peabody High School homecoming queen in ceremonies conducted prior to the Peabody-Remington football game Friday night. Shana Maples and Andra Shank were the queen's attendants. Queen Brenda is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Riggs of Burns.

Miss Margaret Keiler, veteran teacher, addressed the senior citizens Tuesday afternoon, reviewing incidents from her 33 years of teaching. She taught many years in the Mullinville grade school in western Kansas.

James Baker was picked to head the Peabody Kiwanis Club for the year 1958 last week at the regular club session.

Carolyn Sue Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Johnson, entered Axtell hospital in Newton Tuesday afternoon for one or two weeks of observation and treatment and complete bed rest for the treatment of rheumatic fever.

Mr. and Mrs. John DeForest entertained at a dinner Sunday evening in honor of the birthday of Mrs. John Heath. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Heath, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Skaer, Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Craig and the hosts.

Robert Speir is building a nice cottage in Mayesville.

Tom Hansen is building a new home on his farm in Summit.

The dancing people out in East Branch enjoyed a hop at the home of John Waner last Saturday evening.

E.A. Walden has bought Will Irwin's residence but will not take possession for some months yet.

october 26, 1882

Three wagon loads of old and young folks were down on Whitewater after walnuts last Saturday. Plenty of fun but few walnuts.

The Baptist society expect to picnic Thursday (today) at Lee Springs unless the weather is unfavorable.

Mrs. Buck gave a tea party to a number of lady friends last evening.

Messrs. Kollock, Morse, Hare, Thoburn, and Mrs. Webster, all of Peabody, dined at the Bailey house in Marion last Friday.
