The Summit United Methodist Church, located between Peabody and Burns, has undergone some construction in the last several weeks. The large bell that had been in the church since 1907 was removed and placed on a concrete base in the church yard. Because of safety issues, including the possible deterioration of the supports holding the bell in place, a committee was formed several years ago to discuss bringing the bell down. The late Sherwin Ammeter, a member of the church, was on this committee and very interested in working on the project. After his death in September 1996, his son, Stanley of Florence, began working on the base and recently removed the bell with the help of a crane.
