The "old well" at Peabody water tower is not such a mystery after all. A search of city records by city clerk Marj Graham has revealed a great deal of information which was the well was the heart of the Peabody city waterworks. The well was dug and walled-up in 1886 when the city built its first municipal waterworks. The first vote on the city waterworks was in 1880 and a proposed bond issue of about $5,000 was defeated. In 1885, the bond again was put to vote and approved by voters. The first waterworks called for the well in question plus a windmill above it to lift water out of the ground and a wooden storage tank at the windmill site. The waterworks included the laying of an eight-inch water line from the well to the Santa Fe tracks to "within 50' of the center of the main line tracks." The Santa Fe was given absolute first priority on water.
