june 12, 1997

Lance Slaymaker, son of Ron and Shirley Slaymaker of Emporia, was awarded a doctor of osteopathic medicine from the University of Health Sciences in Kansas City, Sunday, May 25, graduating magna cum laude. He received his BA from Princeton University and his MA in health administration from Duke University. He is the grandson of Florence Slaymaker of Peabody.

Ed and Ethel Helmer celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 12 with family at the Burns Community Center.

All of the approximate 275 visitors at the Memorial Day weekend tours of Prairie Lawn Cemetery commented on the "extremely professional actors and actresses portraying Peabody citizens of the Civil War era." Lynn Hughes was pressed into guide work both days due to an acute shortage of guides. Her children, Clauncey and Connor, did "apprentice work."

Mark Glover was valedictorian and Jill White salutatorian in the Peabody High School class of 1982.

Michael Hodges received his BA degree with a major in physical education from Bethany College, Lindsborg, Sunday.

A Santa Fe train completely demolished an automobile driven by Brice Foth of Peabody about 10:45 Tuesday morning. The accident took place about a mile west and a mile south of Peabody when the car was being driven along the railroad right of way. When the train approached and Foth was unable to get the vehicle off the track in time, he abandoned it and escaped injury.

Wesley Bentz, Peabody's star pole vaulter, tied for fifth in the state track meet last Saturday. He was the only Peabody athlete to score in the state meet.

Mrs. John DeForest was in Wichita this week for jury duty.

Mr. and Mrs. Bob Ensign and family were Wednesday supper guests in the Ernest Beeton home.

The Braddock Needle Club were entertained by Mrs. Malachi Fisher yesterday.

M.M. Dohner and wife went to canton Thursday to attend the funeral of Eli Ginder's little daughter who was burned to death.

Hair switches, at Miss Hardin's, very cheap.

Lost last Friday, on the Marion road, between the residences of O.C. Brown and J.E. Bruce, a lady's gum cloak. The finder will confer a favor by leaving the same at this office.

Frank McKerscher is having a fine picket fence built around his residence property.

G.W. Beazley is running a herd at Lee Springs. Stock taken care of at reasonable rates.
