Marvin and Thelma Warkentine of Peabody will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 1997, at the Peabody United Methodist Church in Peabody.

Baptist Willing Workers met April 1 at the home of Carol Gillet. Special guests were Elaine Davis and Emma Stewart of Newton. Emma gave the program showing her collection of patented tins and labels of old medical remedies that cured everything.

Mabel E. Neufeld died Sunday, April 6, 1997, at her home in Peabody at age 91. Mabel was born on Nov. 27, 1905, in Marion County to Joseph and Agnes Hartmen Eberle.

Ed and Jeanne Pierce of Augusta are the new owners of the bait shop and store on Highway 50 in Peabody, formerly known as the Peabody Bait Shop. Mrs. Pierce is a native of Peabody, being the former Jeanne Reynolds.

Miss Leslie Clark, Miss Georgia Lamberson and Miss Edna Ewert attended the "Singing Quakers" concert at Friends University last Thursday evening in Wichita.

Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Fisher spent the weekend sightseeing in Kansas and Oklahoma. The James Souths had won a trip to Las Vegas and the Fishers stayed with Annette South while her parents traveled.

D.M. Ward left Sunday for Buffalo and Lockport, N.Y., to take care of some legal matters.

Mrs. Henry Yakel received a severe cut over her eye Monday afternoon when the wind blew a door against her face as she stooped to set a saucer of milk down for a kitten. Several stitches were required.

The Peabody Women's Relief Corps held its regular meeting Friday afternoon with 18 officers and members present. Three new members, Blanche West, Eudora Shepher and Evelyn Engel were initiated into the Corps.

april 4, 1907

Florence will be dry. The city election in Florence held today was a hotly contested one, the vote being the largest in years. It resulted in the election of J.W. Clendenem, the temperance candidate for mayor and all of his ticket with the exception of one councilman.

A new bank has been chartered at Walton with a capital of $10,000 distributed among 45 stockholders. They expect to open for business about May 1. Guy Hawk has been doing the chief "rustling" to get the bank organized.

One of the most enjoyable social events in the history of the organization was given Monday evening at the Grand Army of the Republic Hall by the members of the Women's Relief Corps to their families and invited guests. The early part of the evening was spent in social conversation, a few humorous "April Fool" jokes and a good time generally. At 8 o'clock the company were invited to partake of a most bountiful supper, which the ladies are famous for serving.

At noon the 15th of March, six persons were baptized by immersion in Catlin creek, as the result of the labors of the Rev. Krupp at the upper Catlin schoolhouse.

Each subscriber to the Gazette is entitled to a copy of Kendall's "Treatise on the Horse and His Disease," and can have the same by calling at the office.

Five car loads of Mormons went west last Wednesday.
