Nearly 100 quilts are being gathered up, eagerly awaiting National Quilting Day and "A Taste of Peabody" that will be held Saturday, March 15, 1997, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Peabody. Nearly 20 locations will display the quilts.

Mark Kottwitz of Hutchinson has passed try-outs and has been chosen to be a member of the famed United States Army Band. He is a senior at Hutchinson High and will report for duty July 17. He will be one of nine clarinet players in the band.

Gladys Jewell and Tony and Gwen Gaines were in Newton Tuesday evening where they attended the OES meeting at which time Tony received his 50-year pin from the Worthy Grand Patron of Kansas.

Carnella Bloomer, Peabody High School senior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Bloomer of Peabody, was crowned Queen of Courts at halftime ceremonies at the Peabody High School Warriors boys' game Friday night against Inman. Carnella was escorted by Roger O'Neal.

Mr. and Mrs. Jack Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Schmill, Shawn, Courtney, and Jamie went skiing at Breckenridge, Colo., the past weekend from Saturday until Thursday. On the last day of skiing Shawn had the ill luck to fall and break a leg.

Helen Baker Potter, lifetime resident of Peabody, died Saturday, Feb. 20, at the age of 92.

march 7, 1907

A stereopticon lecture will be given at the Methodist church next Tuesday evening under the auspices of the Home Missionary Society. The lecture will illustrate women's work among women immigrants. Nearly 100 hand-painted views will be given and Rev. Switzer will give the lecture. Admission 10c.

One eight-foot steel wheel and 20-foot wood tower — $20. One pump, $5. Mill is two years old, in good order and a bargain at this price. John Fox, Jr. One mile east of the northeast corner of Peabody.

Mrs. Huddle was badly burned around the neck last week by having a cloth that was wrapped around her neck catch fire from the stove.

Miss Grace Shriver is a new apprentice in Mrs. Roberts' millinery store. Miss Annabel Porter will finish her apprenticeship and Miss Lottie Zirkle will also be with her again this season.

march 2, 1882

Mr. Burns, a farmer living several miles southeast of town, is building a large stone barn — Gibbs and Son, contractors.

T.M. Potter's infant is quite sick.

Duesler's mail "coach" was delayed last Friday in Butler County, south of town, by his horse giving out. He has since bought a nicely matched span of ponies, of Charles Westbrook.

The debate before the next meeting of the debating club will be the subject of evolution. It promises to be highly interesting, some of our best legal talent being "retained" on it.
