The trial of the accused assassin of Garfield has been the front page story, almost filling the front page, for a month now. Bits of the trial of Guiteau continue, 30th day: The assassin opened proceedings by making a half apology for his brutality to George Scoville, classing him as a fine examiner of titles and announcing that Charles H. Reed had consented to assume charge of the case. Dr. S.H. Talcott of Middletown, New York, testified in most emphatic terms that as a result of his careful examination of the prisoner in jail and observation of his conduct in court, he was sane. This statement was received with applause. Dr. McDonald said he knew of a man who was insane for 21 years. Scoville: "and then he got well?" "No sir, he died." One witness testified, "I believe he has been feigning what he believed to be insanity, not real insanity. I believe he has been attempting to give the impression he is insane and with that idea, has been acting a part."
