Crowd bids high at Peabody Main Street auction

Supporters of Peabody Main Street enjoyed a steak feed, "To Die For" dessert auction, and an auction of Peabody memorabilia and gift items Saturday evening at the American Legion Hall.

About 80 people lined up for steak, salad, a potato bar, zwieback, and drink. Immediately following the meal more than $1,300 was raised by selling 10 desserts donated by some of the best cooks in Peabody.

Nearly 100 items ranging from a four-hour pontoon boat ride for four on Marion County waters to original photographs of Peabody and the Flint Hills to Grandma's mustard from Peabody Sausage House were sold to the highest bidders.

"The meal and auctions were fun," said Main Street director Kristen Hooper. "Everyone was generous with their donations and their bidding. The events raised about $8,500.

"We have some bills to pay, but this will go a long way toward supporting Main Street projects," she added.

The benefit auction is held every other year and is a major funding source of the program.
