Cross country team performs well at Hesston

Peabody-Burns High School and Junior High cross country team members traveled to Clearwater this past week for the first meet of the season.

Several high school and junior high competitors won medals. The team travels Thursday to Hesston.

"The kids ran well," said coach Tony Zappone. "It's hard to win a medal at this meet because there are a lot of runners. I was pleased with their performance."

On the junior-senior girls' two-mile course, Tiana McGee earned a medal, finishing fourth with a time of 13:25. Kate Topham medaled with a 14th place finish.

Also medaling for PBHS were Alyssa Carter at 17th and Ashley Elliott at 22nd. Stephanie Vetter came in 52nd and Anna Zappone finished 65th.

For the freshmen-sophomores, Sherilyn Hill finished 60th and Samantha Pickens came in 65th.

On the boys' side, Andrew Topham ran the 5K course in 17:52 to earn a third place medal. Duane Unruh medaled at 27th and Jacob Wolf medaled at 30th. Also finishing in the 5K were Derek Benson 33rd, Nicholas Whitney 39th, Jesse Riggs 45th, and Zach Dameron 50th.

Finishers in the junior-senior boys' two-mile course included Christian Bengtsson 33rd, Isaac Good 40th, and Jason Carroll 48th.

Finishers in the freshmen-sophomores two-mile course were Ryan Wiebe 52nd, Thomas McGee 55th, and Ethan Riggs 56th.

Three seventh grade runners ran a one-mile course with Aaron Topham medaling at 15th and Martin Hofkamp coming in 45th for the boys, while Shelby Elliott finished 32nd for the girls.

Four eighth grade runners ran the one-mile course. Kendall Wiebe medaled at fourth and Cade Middleton medaled at 23rd. Also medaling for the eighth grade was Nick Hintz 29th. Joe Zappone also finished 33rd.
