County officially purchases transer station

Marion County officially now owns the solid waste transfer station located in Marion.

The bond closing took place at the offices of Brookens & Collett during a special meeting of Marion County Commission.

Papers were signed, money for the purchase was transferred by wire, and the county took ownership of the transfer station from KC Development, according to Carol Maggard, county clerk.

The county paid a total of $825,000 for the station, which included a $75,000 down payment.

The funds for the purchase came through the sale of bonds. On Dec. 9, the county voted to accept the bond offer from Commerce Bank, N.A., Kansas City, Mo., at a net cost of $165,436.45, and an average annual net interest rate of 3.401709 percent.

KC Development will continue to operate the facility for the county until Dec. 31. On Jan. 1, the county assumes operating duties.

Contract hauler hired

In preparation for that Jan. 1 date, commissioners met in a Thursday special meeting to make more decisions regarding the day-to-day operations of the transfer station.

The question of whether to contract with a driver or with a hauling company was decided when the commission voted to enter into agreement with Robinson Trucking, Florence, to serve as contract hauler.

Kevin Robinson's bid to haul refuse for $2.10 per loaded mile for a period of one year was accepted. Commissioners said acting county attorney Keith Collett would draw up that contract. Robinson will be included as the contractural agreement is made, Maggard said.

A second contract hauler bid was submitted by Ray Hiebert, for $2.70 per loaded mile. Bill D. Berry submitted a bid to serve as a contract driver.

Commissioners then adjourned into executive session with transfer station manager David Brazil to interview applicants for the equipment operator position. No action was taken.
