County mitigation plan completed

A county mitigation plan was approved Monday by Marion County Commission and sent to the state for final approval.

County emergency communications and emergency management director Michele Abbott-Becker said all public entities participated in the plan except for USD #398. The lack of participation from the lone taxing entity will not affect the county's ability to obtain approval and position itself for mitigation funds in case of disaster.

The plan also is required when taxing entities apply for disaster funds.

Abbott-Becker also explained that a storm shelter for USD #408 was included in the plan because Abbott-Becker applied for grant funds on behalf of the school district to include a storm shelter with the new sports complex project.

Currently Marion Elementary School students have to walk more than two blocks to Eastmoor United Methodist Church in case of a tornado. A shelter in the new gymnasium, across the street from MES, would provide a closer shelter for students and staff. The shelter also would accommodate those attending and participating in events at the complex.

USD #408 Superintendent Lee Leiker said Marion Middle School and Marion High School students take shelter in the locker rooms of the high school gymnasium which is below ground level.

The county will be notified if the plan has been approved.

A mitigation plan identifies the county's vulnerable areas. An action plan explains how environmental effects will be avoided which include legal and financial measures, and institutional arrangements.
