County auditor presents nuts, bolts of budget process

A public hearing held Monday evening by Marion County Commission for input on the 2007 budget was not what most who attended thought it would be.

The session was informative with the county's auditor Scot Loyd of Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk & Loyd, LLC, presenting information of how a budget is formulated but most in attendance wanted to hear the county's plans for its upcoming budget year.

Loyd explained to the crowd of 30 that included county employees, and representatives from Marion, Hillsboro, and Marion County Hospital District #1, that it was too early for the commission to discuss details about the future budget.

This explanation was provided after Marion City Administrator David Mayfield asked the commission's stance on resurfacing Sunflower Road and South Third Street.

Loyd said he changed the direction of the meeting because it was too premature for those decisions to be made. He added that he still needed to meet with department heads regarding their plans.

Commission chairman Dan Holub addressed Mayfield's concern and said the county is aware that the road needs attention.

Fuel costs have significantly increased road construction costs, making the county take second looks at future road projects.

The next public hearing for public input will be at 7 p.m. July 24.
