Council sorts expenses for college

Staff reporter

The Hillsboro City Council approved expenses for some city utilities for phase I of the Tabor College expansion project.

During the special meeting March 28, cost estimates were reviewed with the council dissecting each aspect to determine who should pay for what.

City administrator Steve Garrett said, in his opinion, upgrades to water lines are the city's responsibilities. Underground drainage primarily benefits Tabor College.

When a request is made by a developer to bury electrical lines, the developer has paid. However, the city has paid for new electricity to the development.

Mayor Delores Dalke said it was important that all engineering of the project be reviewed by the city's engineering consultant, so all issues are addressed and meet city specifications.

Decisions had to be made at this meeting because the college is eager to have portions of the project completed by August, said Dalke. She suggested Miesse Construction be contacted for a bid so the work can be scheduled. Miesse Construction had completed several projects for the city and was familiar with city specifications.

The breakdown of expenses were:

— Replace street and waterline on two blocks of Adams Street; city and funds from a Kansas Department of Transportation grant.

— Waterline from A to D streets on Madison; city will pay, approximately $80,000. Bob Privateria, the city's engineer consultant, was authorized to contact Miesse Construction for bid on this portion of the project.

— Storm sewer drain between C and D streets; city will pay approximately $9,000 for engineering and inspection.

— Underground electrical service from Madison Street to the school's cafeteria; Tabor College pays.

— Transformers for the underground electrical to the new residence hall and to the Ampride building; city will pay for new service line to residence hall, approximately $25,650.

In other business:

— The council approved the renewal of a city liquor license for James William Miesse American Legion Post 22, and an engineering contract with Reiss and Goodness for concrete replacement on North Ash, from the north line of First Street to the north line of Third Street.
