Concerts planned for summer

By Joanna Brazil

Now that summer is here, let the entertainment that accompanies warm sunny evenings begin! We are busy planning and looking forward to creating some fun memories for you, your family, and friends over the course of the next few months in our lovely Peabody parks. Each concert will have ice cream available for sale to enjoy as you absorb familiar and toe-tapping tunes performed by a variety of local and visiting artists.

To start the season, Peabody Bible Church is hosting the first concert and ice cream social Sunday in the city park. Free ice cream will be served at 6 p.m. with music beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Starting the evening's music is The Praise Band from St. Luke Presbyterian Church in Newton. Performing at 7 p.m. are Gene and Beth Green, Jimmy Wallace, Evan LaRue, Charlie Montnye and their friends, Amy George, Vic Anderson, and Brian LaRose. The Bible church invites all to join in the ReUnion Concert of Praise and Worship.

The next concert is for all of you talented artists in the area who wish to share your talents with a friendly audience from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 8 in downtown Santa Fe Park. If you are interested in performing, please sign up by Aug. 4 at the city office or contact Joanna Brazil at (620) 983-2174, email pmsa@peabodyks.com. Ice cream will be available for sale at this concert.

Mark your calendars for a fun-filled evening Aug. 22. The Farmers Market Association is hosting its annual dinner in Santa Fe Park. While you enjoy homemade and homegrown goodies, you also can enjoy the great hits of the Peabody Community Band, directed by Virginia Skinner. This year's performance includes a flute choir and features Nancy Murray Muholland of Maryland. Daughter of the Rev. Henry and Helen Murray of Newton, Nancy lived in Peabody as a child. She has a master's degree in flute performance from Shenandoah University Conservatory and will be offering a flute clinic during her visit to Peabody in August.

The Peabody Community Band is a group of all ages and they welcome others to join them. If you are interested in joining the band or for more information about the flute clinic, contact Virginia Skinner at (620) 983-2246.

The final concert in Santa Fe Park for the summer is none other than Frankie Valens, the legendary pop singer of the 60s and 70s. Accompanying him is his wife, concert pianist Phyllis Valens. The two will perform his signature song, "This Magic Moment," and other classic hits of the 50s, 60s and 70s like "She Cried," "Unchained Melody," and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." This concert will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Sept. 26. A picnic dinner will be served for a small fee by the Peabody Main Street Association.

Bring a lawn chair or blanket to all the concerts. All of the concerts are free of charge, although some have goodies for sale. There is no charge for ice cream at the first concert Sunday by Peabody Bible Church.

Look for more details in future editions of the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin. For more information, please contact Joanna Brazil, director of the Peabody Main Street Association, at 983-2175.
