Completion of cellular tower has not helped everyone

When Alltel Communications announced Nov. 24 that the long awaited cellular tower was operational, people were happy.

Many Peabody cell phone owners had waited months, even years, to be able to get a signal from within the city limits.

Unfortunately, some are still waiting.

According to city treasurer Stephanie Ax, the city office has had a number of calls from cell phone users still unable to make calls with their cell phones.

"It's my understanding that people whose service is with other providers are still not able to receive a good signal," said Ax. "In some cases it is no better than it was before the tower was said to be functional."

Ax said the city contacted Alltel when the complaints started coming in. The company said that for the time being "operational" only applies to Alltel accounts and new digital phones.

People with older model digital phones, analog phones, and cell phone service with other companies still will have service problems.

Ax recommends that cell phone users contact their providers if they continue to have problems.
