Committees almost ready for July Fourth Celebration
Tim Peterson can use a few more volunteers to work the gates at the park on the Fourth.
"But then, I can always use a few more volunteers at the gate," he added. "Seems like every year we could use more, but we get the job done with whatever we have."
It is down to the wire for chairmen of the committees that add to the festivities of the Fourth of July extravaganza.
Tammy Whiteside and Rose Thomason are in charge of the annual parade once again and have announced the fire trucks will be spraying water along the parade route.
"We have had lots of requests from the kids for this," said Whiteside. "We have gotten permission from the city as long as we honor requests for dry areas."
Whiteside said the 200 block of Walnut from Division Street south to the bank corner will be considered a dry area.
"Both sides of the street," she added. "No water will be squirted on anyone in that block.
"Also, if you live on the parade route and would rather not have your guests or family get wet, just call us and we will be happy to tell the guys not to spray you." Contact Whiteside at 983-2079 or Thomason at 983-2113.
The parade will line up at 4 p.m. in the high school parking lot and begin heading south on Walnut at 5 p.m. The parade will turn west at 2nd Street and disburse at the park.
Whiteside and Thomason have collected money for cash prizes in the following categories: child entry, float entry, and car entry.
Whiteside also noted that this year they are allowing demolition derby cars in the parade.
"Another thing I'd like to remind people," she said, "is that when people in the parade throw candy for the kids, it is for the kids, not the grownups. We had complaints last year about adults shoving kids out of the way and gathering it all up."
The women also are planning to place a sign downtown honoring local servicemen and women who currently are serving in the armed forces. People who would like to have their family member recognized for his or her service should contact Whiteside or Thomason as soon as possible.
Whiteside and her husband Brian also are in charge of the Vintage Car Show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at the park.
"The entry fee is only $10," she said. "Not $20 as it states on the flyers. And if it rains we will hold it downtown so the cars don't get muddy."
Members of Peabody Fourth Celebration Society are hoping so many volunteers involved in so many facets of the celebration mean there will be something for everyone in Peabody to enjoy this Fourth of July!
