Class of '56 celebrates 50th anniversary years ago

Members of Peabody High School class of 1956 got together Memorial Day weekend 2006, and celebrated the 50th anniversary of their high school graduation.

Twenty-six members with spouses and guests met May 27 at Peabody-Burns Elementary School for a barbecue dinner.

Those present from out-of-state were Dolores (Homan) Clark and Lucille (Westbrook) Daughtery, Mesa, Ariz.; Gene Manahan, Columbia, Mo.; Linford Schmidt, Omaha, Neb.; Charles Windsor, Cypress, Texas; Corval Sattler, Chino, Calif.; Beverly (Klien) Wilson, San Marcos, Calif.; and Charles Bentz, Eugene, Ore.

Attending from Kansas were Lucille (Newfield) Wolfe, Salina; Janice (Pierce) Gradert, Sara (Murphy) Truax, Donella (Thornton) Lais, Bob Uphoff, Don Regier, and Ted Regier, all of Newton; Alfred Schmidt, Walton; Eunice (Zexie Stovall) Falconer, El Dorado; Darroll Williams, Valley Center; Mary Ellen (Lackey) Windsor, Haven; Craig Stallwitz and Frank Botkin, Wichita; Wanda (Schmidt) Whilhite, Overbrook; Imogene (Gaede) Britton, Waverly; and Warren Slocombe, Martin Koslowsky, and James South of Peabody.

The afternoon of May 28, the group met at the home of James and Carmen South for a light supper and more reminiscing.

They were joined by classmate Esther (Klingenberg) Schrag of McPherson and former teachers Neysa Eberhard of Newton and Lucille Meirowsky of Peabody. Also attending were Maurice and Nancy Meirowsky, Peabody; Jack and Kerrie Kirkpatrick of Herford, Ariz.; and Gifford and Barbara Jordan of Springdale, Ark.

Class members who were still in town on Memorial Day met for the annual services at Prairie Lawn Cemetery and attended the dinner at Peabody-Burns High School.
