Clarification: No hike in mill levy

In the Dec. 23 issue of the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin, it was reported Peabody-Burns USD 398 board of education voted to raise the mill levy for the recreation commission for this year and years to come. The action taken by the board of education will not raise the mill levy, only clear up an issue with paperwork for taxation purposes.

The recreation commission passed a resolution at its inception for one mill levy to begin operation. A few years later the state gave recreation commissions the opportunity to increase that levy to two mills. Peabody-Burns Recreation Commission took advantage of that option in 1991, and raised its mill levy to two mills. This has been in effect since that time and the school district has collected those taxes for the recreation commission each year.

This year the county asked for confirmation of the additional mill for taxing purposes. It seems Peabody-Burns Recreation Commission was "grandfathered" in on the initial mill increase but did not have on file a copy of the new resolution. The action of the board during the meeting was a motion to enact the updated resolution for the county and state as it relates to the taxation for the recreation commission. This action will not increase the mill levy.
