City deeds pool, approves lease with school district

Staff reporter

Marion City Commission approved a conditional warranty deed and lease agreement Monday with USD 408 for an outdoor swimming pool that will pave the way for new facilities.

At a previous meeting, the school district had requested the city create the necessary documents to deed the land where the current city pool is located at Thorp and Lawrence streets to the school district. The district also wanted the city to lease and operate the new outdoor pool.

Voters within the Marion-Florence school district will have an opportunity to approve the construction of a new outdoor swimming pool, indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, and auditorium. Plans are for the two swimming pools and gymnasium to be located on the same parcel of land where the current city pool is located.

The auditorium would be located between Marion Middle School and Marion High School gymnasium.

Funding for the project would be provided by a bond issue but will not increase property taxes because the current bond on the new middle school and Marion Elementary School addition is being retired.

Commissioner Max Hayen questioned the legal description of the documents for the pool land. City attorney Dan Baldwin and city administrator David Mayfield were in Alabama the earlier part of this week and were not at the city meeting to answer questions. However, the commission did approve the documents subject to the legal description being corrected if wrong.
