Peabody Main Street Association's promotions committee will present a semi-annual fall women's retreat, "Cameos, Calling Cards and Chocolate" from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at the senior center.
Cost, including lunch, is $12. Brochures are available at Peabody City Office or in Peabody businesses.
"Cameos, Calling Cards and Chocolate" has a variety of programs that highlight history, creativity, entrepreneurship, and recipes.
The morning will begin with Janet Hamous, president of Peabody Historical Society, presenting information about communication via calling cards. In a world with cell phones and answering machines, calling cards cease to exist as a means of communication.
Siblings Jacob, Joshua, and Elizabeth Marshall have moved to Peabody to run an old world printing business in partnership with the historical society's print museum. They use antique printing presses to create that vintage look for clients' printed materials. They will demonstrate a printing press in action, and talk about old world printing.
Kim Redeker recently opened a new business with her mother in downtown Emporia, the Sweet Granada Chocolate Café. She will be at the retreat to talk about the history, process, and fun facts of chocolate, as well as highlight her experience starting a business.
Marilyn Jones, long time historical society volunteer and enthusiast, will share tidbits of Peabody history in her usual fun and entertaining way.
Mary Odett, Dana DeCicco, and LeAnne Hubbard, co-owners of River City Rubber Works of Wichita, will lead the group in a craft project making coasters. Women can take home their creations.
Mary Sauble, avid antique collector of Cedar Point, also will be there to discuss antique jewelry and how to care for it.
Women are encouraged to wear a broach. We will hold a broach contest for the biggest, best story, most colorful, most unique, and most dainty broaches. Prizes will be awarded.
The Main Street promotions committee has been hosting these retreats for almost three years and still have much to offer. Every spring and fall our guests are treated to a one-of-a-kind experience featuring gourmet food, fun crafts, informative speakers, and time for laughter and socialization. At the women's retreats, attendees will find a group of devoted individuals who want to share their passions.
