Chili cook-off, garage sales planned at county lake

Register of deeds Makovec retires, Ottensmeier appointed

Marion County Commission approved tentative plans for a chili cook-off at Marion County Lake facilities.

Lake superintendent Steve Hudson reported Friday that there was a group of volunteers who have organized a chili cook-off Nov. 3, with proceeds going to an improvement fund for the county lake.

Lake residents also will be encouraged to have garage sales that day.

In other business:

— Marion County Register of Deeds Faye Makovec retired this past week. Her last day was Friday.

The commission appointed deputy register of deeds Jo Ottensmeier as acting register of deeds until the Republican central committee meets and makes a recommendation to the Governor of a Republican to complete Makovec's unexpired term.

The register of deeds office will be up for election in 2008.

— The commission passed a resolution to abate property taxes for the first part of 2007, on a property in Florence that the county obtained from a tax sale but then sold later in the year.

— A contract between Marion County and Morris County was approved for Marion County Health Department to administer the WIC program for both counties.

— A letter was sent to Earl Mueller of Newton regarding the county not being interested in purchasing a building owned by Mueller on South Third Street that formerly was Head Start.

— Letters also were sent to the board of directors of Marion County Hospital District #1, board of directors of Hillsboro Community Medical Center, Marion City Council, and Hillsboro City Council regarding discussion related to medical needs of the county.

— Sales tax collected in July was down from previous year at $37,374.

— Department for elderly director Jayne Gottschalk reported approximately 30 seniors from Marion County recently attended a senior fair at Salina. The event attracted 900 to 1,000 people.

Gottschalk reminded the commission of the annual meeting of Senior Citizens of Marion County, Inc., at noon Oct. 18 at Marion Senior Center.

— Hudson reported there were only three open lots with electricity on Labor Day weekend and seven the following weekend, and the Chat and Dine Club donated seven red maple trees that were planted around the lake.

— Commissioner Dan Holub requested and received a five-minute executive session to discuss acquisition of property. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.

The next commission meeting is at 9 a.m. Monday at the courthouse.
