Chamber of commerce reviews Halloween party

Florence Chamber of Commerce members met Thursday at Carriage Manor for a noon potluck luncheon meeting. Fourteen members were present.

Following regular business items, reports were given.

Judy Mills and Mary Jane Grimmett reported on a successful "Stringtown Halloween Party" Oct. 29. The women estimated about 125 people in attendance. Guests were served hot dogs and hamburgers. Entertainment featured a fortune teller, bonfire, haunted hayrack rides, and other scary fun.

"We plan to do it again next year," said Grimmett. "We got lots of positive comments and it was something families could do together."

Organizers agreed to get the event on the calendar earlier next year as there were other events being held that kept some people from joining in. The evening was sponsored by PRIDE, the chamber, fire and ambulance crews, and library.

In other business the chamber:

— elected officers for 2007. Those chosen were Sara Neal, president; Cindy Holt, vice president; Mary Jane Grimmett, treasurer; and Trayce Warner, secretary.

— selected Dec. 2 for a downtown tree lighting ceremony and Dec. 9 for "Breakfast with Santa." Times will be announced later. Sara Neal will chair both events.

— agreed to meet at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Mercantile to plan Christmas promotion details.

— agreed to sponsor and print an updated business directory to be inserted into the December issue of "Crossroads."

— agreed to work with PRIDE and decorate the downtown planters, splitting the cost.

— discussed hosting an appreciation dinner the night of the tree lighting ceremony and inviting the fire and ambulance departments, library, and PRIDE. No decision was made.
