Carl Hansen

Carl Frederick Hansen, 92, formerly of Peabody, died Jan. 22, 2003, at Presbyterian Manor, Emporia.

He was born Dec. 8, 1910, at Peabody the son of the late Hans Peter and Alma Sophia (Rasmussen) Hansen.

On Sept. 10, 1932, he was married to Verna Marie Suffield at Wichita. She died June 20, 1988.

On Sept. 15, 1989, he was married to Helen Kathleen Zuhars at Peabody. She survives. Other survivors include a stepson, Jon Stucky of Apex, N.C.; daughters Carlene Bedner and Rita Thomas, both of Emporia; brother, Lawrence Hansen of Richardson, Texas; three grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; four brothers, Richard, Harold, Lester, and Willard Hansen; sister, Elsie Hansen; and one grandson.

Services were held Saturday morning at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Emporia, with Pastor Peter Rupprecht officiating.

Inurnment was held that afternoon at Claney Cemetery, Marion.

Memorial funds have been established at the church and with Peabody High School Alumni Association.

The eldest of seven children, he was born on the Townsend Ranch and grew up there. He especially enjoyed helping with horses.

He attended rural school and Peabody High School, graduating in 1930. He then attended Wichita Business College before going back to the ranch.

He and his wife lived in the small house on the ranch where he was born. When his parents moved to Peabody in 1947 he and his wife moved to the large ranch house and he became foreman for the Lathrops, who had purchased the ranch in 1936.

When his father died, in 1948, Carl became ranch superintendent.

He served in many capacities, on the Soil Conservation board, Farm Bureau, Welfare board, and other boards.

In 1967 the ranch was sold to the Wallaces and re-named Way-D-K Ranch. Carl and his wife, Verna, moved to Peabody where he was a life long member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and was active in many capacities such as the church board, Sunday school superintendent, Brotherhood, and Luther League.

He also worked as a carpet layer for Baker Furniture, was on the City Council, and Prairie Lawn Cemetery Board.
