Car show is new celebration event

A car show featuring antique and classic cars was held in conjunction with Peabody festivities at the park for the Fourth of July celebration this year.

Organized by Brian and Tammy Whiteside, the event was a good addition to the many activities going on in the park during the hours prior to the fireworks show.

Twelve entrants braved the rain and mud to participate in the event.

"I think the weather kept some people from coming," said Tammy Whiteside. "A lot of car owners just won't take their cars out when the weather is bad."

The Whitesides were not discouraged and plan to hold the show again next year.

"We want to try it again and see if we can't get it to develop into something big," she said.

They felt the number of people coming into the park to look over the cars indicated interest in seeing the event continue.

Dale Winter of Peabody took first place, Albert Haviland of Wichita was second, and Jonathan Reisch of Wichita was third. Richie Grace of Peabody won the young adult division, and Robert Zimmerman of Douglass took best of show.
