Cabins, marina may be coming to co. lake
Input encouraged by county commission

New development ideas at Marion County Lake were pitched Monday at the Marion County Commission meeting.
Public input is being sought by commission chairman Dan Holub regarding two topics — possible new development at the lake and economic development opportunities.
Holub tossed out some ideas regarding possible development on the south side of the county lake, east of the dam.
"This area is underused," said Holub, pointing to a map of the county lake.
The area is undesirable for camping because of the rough, rocky terrain, and there are no utility hook-ups available.
Holub wants to know what county taxpayers think of developing that area with cabins, a lodge, and/or single-family dwellings.
Similar cabin developments have been made at El Dorado State Lake, except these at Marion County Lake would have running water, electricity, and be available to rent year-round, said Holub.
"The county could develop or have someone develop and operate," said Holub, with the county maintaining ownership of the land. A lodge also could be constructed with similar operations, he said.
Limited private home sites could be sold, he continued, that could pay for the development of the area.
"We'd have to control density and maintain a view of the lake," Holub said.
Sewer and water lines would have to be installed. He said he asked a representative of the improvement district if the current sewer system could accommodate growth and was told it could.
City of Marion currently provides water to lake residents.
Historical attributes would not be disturbed, Holub said.
A marina also could be added for boat and pontoon rentals.
County residents who have ideas to increase economic development also are encouraged to come forward.
Individuals told Holub and other commissioners there were other economic opportunities besides casino development and the commission want those people to come forward with those ideas.
Individuals should contact the county clerk's office at (620) 382-2185 by Thursday to be placed on the commission's agenda the following Monday.
