Twenty-seven senior citizens and friends met Aug. 12 at the Burns Community Building to enjoy the monthly potluck dinner and a very interesting speaker, Brice "Tim" Durbin of Topeka.
He is a former Burns resident, and the brother of the late Betty Grimwood.
Durbin gave a most interesting talk. He always wanted to come back to Burns to speak, to let people know what Burns meant to him. Anything he accomplished, and his accomplishments were many, was because of parents, teachers, and others in Burns.
He stated, "We all were poor and didn't know it, but all comfortable and did know it." He congratulated Burns on its accomplishments and closed with a poem, "All in the State of the Mind."
Birthdays acknowledged were those of Don Parrish and Tim Durbin.
It was reported the group had a good showing at the Marion County Fair. Minamae Bierman and Esther Nelson each won two blues.
Marie Clark and Laverna Parrish each won three blues and Kathleen Brenzikofer and Joyce Kyle each won a red.
Certificates were received by 15 members who attended "Fifty-five Alive."
Eighteen "Relay for Life" walkers did very well in spite of the warm night. They raised $750.
They noted their appreciation to the Burns Lions Club and all the individuals who sponsored them and made donations to the American Cancer Society.
Announcements included the Senior Fair to be held Sept. 16 in Salina and a mini-health fair to be held Sept. 23 in the community building in Burns.
