Burns Community Center will be open during storm warnings

Burns City Council decided to open the Burns Community Center during tornado warnings.

During the May 8 council meeting, the board determined that each council member will be responsible for a section of town to check individual homes following serious storms.

City personnel will show councilmen how to operate the generator.

The council approved a policy to allow the mayor to spend up to $750, without approval of the council, in case of an emergency or crisis.

The council also approved a $500 donation for the City of Greensburg through a fund established by the League of Kansas Municipalities.

In other business:

— Donations will pay for a sidewalk and culvert from Community National Bank and Burns Community Center. Council president Mark Brunhoeber said the Lions Club could make a donation. Glenn said the PRIDE committee also could contribute.

The council approved the motion to have Koehn Concrete proceed with the project.

— Glenn checked with the City of El Dorado regarding a cage around a water tower and was told there was none. The water tower has a fence around it and is locked. Brunhoeber said workers on the tower should wear harnesses and are insured. Kansas Department of Health and Environment only require a fence. No further action was taken.

— Photographs of several nuisance properties were reviewed by the council. Letters will be sent to the owners of the abandoned houses.

— Signs will be posted at the city dump regarding what is allowed. Mayor Mary Glenn said Kansas Department of Health and Environment could shut down the site if illegal items are dumped.

— City water superintendent Earl Glenn reported there were five Dumpsters of trash removed during citywide cleanup.

— Brunhoeber reported he had contacted someone regarding a bid for a range hood at Burns Community Center.

The next council meeting is at 7 p.m. June 12 in Burns City Building.
