Book commemorates P.E.O. in Kansas
In commemoration of the 100-year history of P.E.O. in the state of Kansas, a committee was appointed by Kansas State Chapter of P.E.O. to write such a history.
Former Peabody resident Helen Manka Storbeck was a member of the committee and responsible for conducting research and writing part of the book.
P.E.O. is a women's organization founded in 1869 at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, to promote educational opportunities for women.
Today this organization is found throughout the United States and Canada. In addition to ownership of Cottey College in Nevada, Mo., members provide educational loans and grants for continuing education.
International Peace Scholarships for women from other countries to study in the United States and Canada are available. Women pursuing advanced degrees also are eligible for scholarships.
The book "P.E.O. in Kansas: Our Centennial Heritage" was published by Mennonite Press, Inc., Newton. This is the third book in a series of historical publications about Kansas State Chapter of P.E.O.
"Our Golden Heritage," a 50-year history, is out of print. Helen Storbeck also was one of the co-authors of "Our Diamond Heritage" published in 1978.
A copy of "P.E.O. in Kansas: Our Centennial Heritage" has been donated by Storbeck to the Peabody Library.
