Board of education approves year-end trips
Peabody-Burns USD 398 board of education members met March 13 at Burns Community Building for a regularly scheduled meeting. All members were present.
The board approved trips for Business Professionals of America and Future Farmers of America.
FFA students and sponsor attended a leader lab March 17-18 at Junction City and the board approved transportation and sponsor lodging expenses.
Students in BPA will attend national competition May 9-14 at Orlando, Fla. Board members approved the trip and will provide $215 for travel and student meals.
Melissa Cutberth was offered the assistant track coaching position.
The board accepted with regret the resignation of Paula Schroeder as Peabody-Burns High School cheerleading sponsor, effective April 15.
In other business the board:
— heard from Jim Hoffman, post-prom party chairman, about plans for the all-night party following the dance.
— tabled until a future meeting a decision on all-day kindergarten and revising the grading scale to 90, 80, 70, and 60 percents. The grading scale recommendation was made by Darren Schroeder, representative of the district "Breaking Ranks Team" while the all-day kindergarten rationale was presented by elementary principal Ken Parry. Input from faculty and community surveys will be considered.
— heard from Alstrom about out-of-district education services such as vocational classes taken by USD 398 students. A district policy will be established at the next meeting based on recommendations from Alstrom.
— agreed to appoint Peggy Phillips, Rhonda Loucks, and Mary Brown to the 2006 awards committee. The number and amounts of awards also were approved as presented.
— reviewed two proposed calendars for the 2006-07 school year. No decision was reached.
— approved republishing the budget to take advantage of an increase in state aid due to the audited figures. The increase in budget will not increase taxes to district patrons.
— approved an agreement with American Red Cross to use district facilities as mass care shelters in the event of a disaster.
— was reminded of state assessment tests and Andrew Sheffler's trip Saturday to the state spelling bee.
— heard from Alstrom about a community-wide open house that will include school facilities, that property at Burns has been transferred, that a new tractor has been delivered, that a retaining wall is being erected at the track, and a new sign will be installed at the elementary school reflecting the name change.
— entered an executive session for the purpose of discussing personnel with the superintendent and elementary school principal. No action was taken on return to open session.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. April 10 at the central office.
