Bluejay freshman Doug Pierce had yet to be born when former Tabor men's track standout Allen Regehr set the school record in triple jump, leaping 46 feet seven inches.

For 32 years the record would stand until Pierce broke it Thursday in Tabor's first outdoor meet of the season at Winfield in the Southwestern College Invitational.

Shattering the record by nearly a foot, Pierce's jump of 47-2 earned an automatic ticket to the NAIA outdoor National meet in Fresno, Calif., at the end of May.

Pierce's record-setting jump was just one of the many highlights the Bluejays would roll up.

In women's action, Ashley Malcolm cleared 5-2 to win the women's high jump.

Heidi Schmidt turned in a third-place time of 5:10 in the 1500-meter run while Shelby Miller leaped 16-5 for third in the long jump.

Caleb Stanton took third in the men's 400-meter with a time of 50:29.

Cody Dick and Brent Wichert fought a heated battle for third and fourth in the men's hammer throw with Dick edging out teammate Wichert by a foot with a heave of 141-3.

"It was a good first meet," Bluejay coach Dave Kroeker said. "We got a starting point to work from for the rest of the season."

Up next for the Bluejays is the April 1 meet at McPherson College.
