Goessel High School cross country team participated Thursday in the Peabody meet for the first time.
Coach Greg Bontrager was impressed with the course.
"The kids run through a field, trees, road, and park," he said. "It was incredible."
Although times were slower, it was to be expected with a rougher terrain than the flat courses often used in competition.
Evan Fast led the team with a time of 20:17, good enough for a seventh-place medal.
Kellen Jenkins and Brady Peters finished six seconds apart for 25th and 26th place respectively.
Cameron Voth came in 30th and Jake Schrag finished in 38th place.
In the freshman/sophomore division, Casey Wedel earned a third-place medal with a time of 23:39. The rest of the freshman/sophomore team finished as follows: Chris Johnston, 21st; Travis Duerksen, 26th; Sam Lehrman, 30th; Matt Johnston, 35th; and Ryan Goertzen, 36th.
Both girls on the Bluebird squad took home medals.
Janessa Wedel finished 17th and Jitka Vitova took third in the junior varsity race.
GHS ran this past Tuesday at Southeast of Saline, and will run again Thursday at the Marion meet.
