Bluebird boys lose to Cardinals, defeat Eagles

Goessel High School boys' basketball team is now 7-3 in league play and 13-5 overall, after splitting two games this past week.
Ell-Saline held the Bluebirds to two points in the first quarter of the Feb. 7 league game in Brookville.
The Bluebirds began to peck their way back into the game, but the Cardinals were able to seal the victory with an 18-13 fourth quarter. Goessel lost the low scoring game, 39-31.
For the Bluebirds, Jordan Voth scored 10, Justin Fensky eight, Travis Buller three, and Brett Goerzen, Garrett Hiebert, Nathan Amstutz, Nathan Ensz and Tyler Schroeder each had two points.
Friday's game against Canton-Galva was close throughout the first half.
Goessel scratched out a seven-point lead with four minutes, 48 seconds to play in the second quarter, but the Eagles kept the pressure on.
Goessel executed the fast break several times and the Bluebirds led at half-time, 34-27.
Canton-Galva got as close as 38-36, but the Bluebirds took control of the boards, allowing the Eagles only one shot.
Ensz and Hiebert handled the rebounding duties for the Bluebirds. Canton-Galva narrowed the Bluebird lead to 55-47 with less than three minutes to play, but Goessel made six-of-seven free throws to ice the game, 61-47.
Hiebert finished the night with 18 points, Ensz 10, Voth nine, Schroeder eight, Goerzen eight, Buller and Amstutz each had four points.
