Blood drive is Sept. 13 years ago

Progressive Mothers Club will host the American Red Cross Blood Drive from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at Peabody United Methodist Church.

A meal will be served by the "canteen ladies" and T-shirts will be given to all who donate.

The need for blood in the American Red Cross Central Plains Region has increased 11 percent since 1999 due partly to advances in medical treatments and lingering life spans. However, only 4.6 percent of the population in the region who are able to give blood, actually donate.

The region needs about 500 blood donors every day for hospital patients in Kansas and northern Oklahoma.

Donating blood takes about one hour with the actual donation time taking approximately seven minutes.

Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in general good health. Most medications do not prevent people from donating blood.
